Wisp

Wisp is an Android nostr client built by Barry Deen. It feels like a regular social app: chronological posts, photos, videos, rooms, live streams, private messages, reactions, and a wallet for sending money as easily as liking a post.

The client keeps nostr's moving parts out of the user's way. Wisp implements the outbox model, supports dedicated DM relay sets, and uses end-to-end encrypted private messages. Users can join topic rooms, build custom feeds, upload media through Blossom, and move around the network without depending on a single platform account.

Wisp also includes a non-custodial wallet based on the Breez SDK (Spark). New users can receive zaps, send sats to creators, pay friends, and recover their wallet with a seed phrase. The wallet can display balances in USD, and encrypted wallet backups are stored on relays the user controls.

Why fund it?

Most people meet nostr through a client. If the app makes relays, keys, and Lightning feel like homework, they leave. Wisp keeps the experience familiar. Users still own the identity and choose the relays.

OpenSats supported Wisp in the seventeenth wave of Nostr grants. The grant helps Barry work on Wisp full-time and keeps development focused on onboarding, mobile polish, private messaging, and payments.

Barry is also working on relay infrastructure around Wisp: MOAR, a configurable multi-tenant relay gateway; Haven, a personal relay for storing, backing up, and sharing user events; and AlgoRelay, an algorithmic relay for personalized feeds.

What's next?

Barry's grant plan starts with the Android app. The first jobs are to leave beta, keep Google Play releases moving, and make Normie Mode good enough for people who think in dollars instead of sats. The web client brings the same account, feeds, rooms, DMs, and wallet flows to people who want Wisp on a desktop or shared from a link.

The next big platform target is Wisp for iOS. Dark Wisp explores the same client from a privacy-first angle, with different defaults for people who want a quieter footprint. Relay-based private communities are the longer-term piece: small groups with their own relay policies, their own message history, and fewer reasons to depend on public infrastructure.
